A tour of the LEED Silver French Family Science Center will be given by Myron Taschuk, project manager for Duke Facilities, and She
lley McPhatter with Skanska.
The French Family Science Center, a $115 million and 280,000 square-foot project, was completed in 2006. It features state-of-the-art research and teaching laboratories. The building also features two green roofs, water-less urinamls and heat recovery wheels.
The tour will be followed by this month's Green Drinks at the nearby Energy Hub in the Gross Chemistry Building, an adaptive re-use and resource conservation structure.

The December Green Drinks is fun warm-up to the December 8th GreenNC event and a great opportunity for out-of-towners and locals to experience Downtown Durham's dynamic revitalization. We will host Principal Architect of Belk Architecture Eddie Belk, FAIA, LEED AP BD+C.
For thirty years Belk Architecture has been an historic preservation pioneer dedicated to recycling our working architectural heritage. Their solutions have set preservation standards and guided the evolution of Durham's agrarian industrial architecture into a sustaining legacy.
From Brightleaf Square to American Tobacco to Golden Belt Mill, join us as we hear from Eddie Belk and learn about the evolution of Durham's preservation history, and how it relates to the Green Building industry.

The Triangle USGBC is committed to furthering the Green Building education of our members. In this spirit, and with our GreenNC event being held the follow day, we will raffle off (4) scholarships at this month's Green Drinks. The scholarships will cover the application and exam fee for the recipient to take their LEED Green Associates accreditation exam. Two scholarships will be given to university students, and two will be given to Triangle Chapter USGBC members. To enter the drawing you must be present at the Green Drinks event. Anyone interested should submit their names at the beginning of the night and we will draw raffle tickets later that evening.

Redress Raleigh promotes local eco-friendly designers with attainable, durable, and innovative collections that encompass sustainable practices. Redress Raleigh also educates the public on different aspects of eco-fashion and do-it-yourself apparel alterations. In addition, Redress Raleigh produces an eco-fashion show highlighting local sustainable talent and supports community organizations, and donates part of the proceeds to MorLove. MorLove is a community of environmentally and globally conscious artists, who hone their talents while helping those in need. Please come to listen to Beth speak about past and upcoming events with Redress Raleigh. Beth is no stranger to our chapter. Prior to Green Drinks we will meet at Chatham Community Library for a tour of their award-winning stormwater management and recycling system. The Library is located on the Central Carolina Community College Campus. (address above)
The project uses native landscaping, reuses harvested rainwater, treats wastewater onsite, incorporates day-lighting, and utilizes solar collectors for hot water. The Sustainable Technologies Center also features regional, recycled and low-VOC materials, sustainably harvested wood, and a vegetated roof. The highest level award was bestowed for these green building and water quality protection measures as well as exceptional public outreach efforts.

Come out and enjoy a bicycle ride with the Carolina Tarwheels, as you network with members of the sustainable community. You can choose between two guided bike routes, 12 or 34 miles, all experience levels are welcome.
Please arrive at Maple View Farm promptly at 10:30 am with your bicycle and helmet. A waiver will need to be signed before you are permitted to go on the ride, please print out and bring with you. Following the ride you will be refreshed with some delicious Ice Cream from Maple View Farms, and we will have a discussion on alternative transit within the triangle. Hope to see you there!

Green Plus is a green and sustainable certification and education program that is designed specifically for small and medium sized businesses. It gives employers affordable, practical support in succeeding financially while being good to their environment, employees and community. Green Plus was developed by centers and departments at Duke University and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in conjunction with business and philanthropic leaders over a three-year period. The business plan for the program was designed by the Center for Sustainable Enterprise UNC Chapel Hill’s Kenan-Flagler Business School, and the concept, tools, and program were tested with over 150 businesses from the Midwest and Southeast from 2007 to the present.
Fullsteam is a Durham, North Carolina production brewery and tavern that uses seasonal farmed products, heirloom grains and Southern botanicals.

The 11th Hour is a 2007 documentary film, created, produced and narrated by Leonardo DiCaprio, on the state of the natural environment, with contributions from over 50 politicians, scientists, and environmental activists, including former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, physicist Stephen Hawking, Nobel Prize winner Wangari Maathai, and journalist Paul Hawken. The film documents the grave problems facing the planet's life systems including global warming, deforestation, mass species extinction, and depletion of the oceans' habitats, while proposing potential solutions to these problems by calling for restorative action by the reshaping and rethinking of global human activity through technology, social responsibility and conservation.
