Strategic Plan & Bylaws

In 2009, the NC Triangle Chapter Board of Directors of the chapter established a USGBC NC Triangle Chapter Strategic Plan that aligned with the National USGBC Strategic Plan 2009–2013 with minor modifications in order to harmonize chapter operation with the national USGBC. In 2010, the board of directors set Ten (10) Core Objectives for the year to strengthen the chapter's capacity to achieve the goals established in the strategic plan:

2010 Strategic Plan - Core Objectives

1 - Build robust brand identity
Develop clear idea of what it means to be the "go to" green source. Then, build overall branding campaign to establish this identity.

2 - Become a "Hub" for education
Perform market assessment to evaluate existing outlets for green building education. Then, formulate strategic plan to establish the NCTC USGBC as a respected source for education.

3 - Reconstitute coalition for statewide advocacy
Goal is to improve advocacy efforts by re-forming a state coalition that can bring more energy and resources to bear in pursuing a shared agenda. Original coalition included AIA, NCTC USGBC, HBA, Sierra Club, Triangle Conservation, state energy office and state historic preservation office.

4 - Develop Organizational Excellence
Develop Organizational Excellence by doing the following: a. Facilitate efficient communication and document sharing between committees; b. Leverage existing tools and resources (i.e., extranet, other Chapters' documents), c. Review and organize committee roles and positions; d. Hire an Executive Director/Staff Member; e. Create automated "welcome" process (including "welcome packets")for new members.

5 - Establish an Events Committee
Create new committee that will be responsible for all planning and logistics associated with holding any kind of NCTC USGBC event, thereby allowing the other committee members to focus on their own committee goals.

6 - Membership Growth
Increase Chapter membership by broadening geographic outreach (with a special emphasis on Eastern NC) and by reaching out to new populations and constituencies (i.e., minority contractors, Hispanic community, manufacturing industry, etc.).

7 - Strategic Allies
Identify and reach out to new groups for purposes of collaboration and mutual co-promotion. Collaborative efforts may include event co-hosting and shared press releases.

8 - Fundraising
In these economically challenging times, it will take a special effort to secure the funds necessary to advance the Chapter's 2010 agenda. The Development Committee will take responsibility for authoring a creative and well-organized plan for generating the new sponsorship. In turn, all committees are encouraged to participate as part of a unified effort to execute that plan.

9 - Establish a Know-It-All Committee
Board Member and SERC representative, Dona Stankus, will lead the effort to establish a "Know-It-All" Committee. This new committee will serve as the clearing house for all queries conerning green-building, sustainability, the Chapter organization and the national USGBC organization.

10 - Existing Buildings Initiative
Committees will look for ways to support the greening of existing buildings, including potential outreach and education. This corresponds with the USGBC national initiative.
